When the ride is "at rest" the large spring on the blue spindle is held compressed by a nylon wire attached to the smaller black wheel in the image above. To raise the seats, the tension in the spring is released by the wheel turning anticlockwise. The red/green blue/ wires form a switch which limits the extent of the rise and fall of the seats at the start and end of the ride.
